Knowing about them, it seems as if they are like the underworld described in the Vedas and Puranas. However, only humans live here. Most of these people, especially communities in hot climates, traditionally live in caves to escape the heat. Today we are going to tell you about one such place, which is located in Tunisia.
The name of this small village located in southern Tunisia is Matmata. Generally, people living under the ground settle near the mountains, but the people here build their houses by digging a big pit in the ground. First of all, after digging a pit, cave-like rooms are built from there, in which they live. In this way the open pit acts as a courtyard. Sometimes these pits are connected to other nearby “pit-like” courtyards through ditch-like passages, forming a large underground labyrinth.
Let us tell you that Matmata and some similar cities of Tunisia are situated on a shelf of sandstone, which is soft enough to be excavated with hand tools. But they are also very strong, due to which they do not suffer any damage for many years. Let us tell you that the people here are called Berbers, who have been digging houses in the ground in this manner for more than a thousand years.
The Matmata Plateau, where this type of habitat is found, is located next to a narrow corridor, the only land route between Libya and Tunisia. This area was occupied by many invaders at different times, forcing the people living here to retreat from the plateau. In such a situation, they started digging houses high in the mountains. However, as relations with the Arab invaders became friendlier, the Berbers began to feel more secure. In such a situation, villages and houses were developed on the lower slopes of the mountains and later in the plains.
People come to visit from all over the world
While we build our houses above the ground, the people of Matmata built their houses by digging the ground. These houses are very strong and unique. For this reason it is also a major tourist attraction. Not only this, it is said that the popular Hollywood film Star Wars was also shot at this place. The house of Luke Skywalker, the main character of this film, is actually an underground hotel named Hotel Sidi Driss.
