Hyderabad: The historical buildings of Hyderabad city preserve a rich heritage. One of these is Purani Haveli which is also known as Masarat Mahal. Located in Hyderabad, Telangana, this mansion was once the official residence of the Nizam. It was constructed in 1577 AD in a U shape with two parallel rectangular wings and a residential palace situated in the middle.
According to Zuber Zahid Sarkar, an expert in the history of Deccan, Mir Nizam Ali Khan, the second Nizam of Hyderabad, had acquired this mansion from Rukunuddaula of the Momin dynasty in 1717. Nizam’s successor Sikandar Jah lived here for some time, after which he shifted to Chowmahalla Palace. This is the reason why this building is known as Purani Haveli.
Nizam Museum and current use
There is also a museum within the mansion which is dedicated to the last Nizam of Hyderabad State and displays various objects from his period. Now a part of this historic palace complex is being used as a school and industrial training institute.
world’s longest wardrobe
A unique feature of this mansion is the world’s longest wardrobe located here. It is built on two levels and also has a hand-operated wooden lift. However, there is no official evidence of it being the longest. Tourists say that this building looks like 18th century European palaces.
