ISRO set to launch satellite INSAT-3DS today; 5 things to know

Here are 5 points to know about the launch of satellite INSAT-3DS:

1. date and time: The satellite INSAT-3DS which will be on board the spacecraft GSLV F14 during the launch today, February 17, will lift off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC-SHAR) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh at 5:35 pm.
2. The purpose this satellite will serve: The satellite will help in getting more accurate, precise and informative weather forecast by studying the ocean surface and will be able to give warning of natural disaster.
3. 16th mission of GSLV F14: It is the 16th space mission for the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), and aims to deploy the INSAT-3DS satellite into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
4. Grant: GSLV F14 will take off on its 16th mission which is fully funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and is a major step in India’s space progress.
5. success rate: Former ISRO chairman termed GSLV F14 as a “naughty boy” as it is known to face problems frequently. Its failure rate is 40 percent as GSLV F14 has faced problems out of a total of 15 space missions so far. In 6 of them.

ISRO’s last mission involving the GSLV F14 spacecraft in May 2023 was successful, but the previous mission had failed.

INSAT-3DS Mission Details

According to ISRO, the satellite mission GSLV-F14/INSAT-3DS will provide continuity of services and support to the previously launched INSAT-3D (launched in 2013) and INSAT-3DR (launched in September 2016).

After the success of this mission, ISRO will be able to conduct advanced meteorological observations, monitoring of land and ocean surfaces for weather forecasting and disaster warning. The space agency will also be able to provide satellite-aided research and rescue services (SAR) among others.
