A study published by researchers at Ben-Gurian University in Negev, with international colleagues, revealed stunning insight into intestinal fats, fat that surrounds the internal organs. The study found that its effect on health depends on whether it is measured by its absolute area or in proportion to other fat reserves.
Why fat distribution only matters more than BMI
Over the years, doctors know that intestinal fat is more harmful than subcutaneous fat. This study reveals new insights into risks related to obesity, emphasizing the importance of fat distribution on total fat loss. Analyzing 572 participants in 18 months, researchers found that when the fats area of the intestine was associated with inflammation and insulin resistance, its ratio was associated with high triglycerides. Weight loss and reconsideration of health strategies
Assessment of most obesity depends on the BMI or waist circumference, which is not responsible for fat distribution. This “normal” BMI but may ignore individuals with unhealthy fat levels, known as general weight obesity.

More advanced fat distribution analysis can improve health risk assessment and personal treatment. For example, people with insulin resistance can benefit from reducing the intestinal fat area, while people with cholesterol issues can focus on reducing the fats ratio of the intestine.
The study developed models to estimate intestinal fats and ratio using regular clinical markers such as waist circumference, age and blood tests, making assessment more accessible without expensive MRIs.
