Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are expected to meet in Washington in February 2025, as diplomats from both the countries will coordinate their schedules to arrange a meeting between the two leaders. The meeting is being planned as concerns over the tariffs that the US President threatened to impose on India and other BRICS countries after taking oath.
Indian and US diplomats are trying to arrange a meeting between PM Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump in Washington in February, two Indian sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters.
Donald Trump threatens to impose tariffs on India and others
After taking oath as the 47th President of America, Donald Trump warned that if the BRICS group countries, which include India, took any step to replace the US dollar, he would impose 100 percent tariff against them.
“If the BRICS countries want to do that, that’s fine, but we are going to impose at least 100 percent tariff on their trade with the United States. They have 100 percent tariff, if they even think, ”he said.
India has been a strategic partner of America in its efforts to counter China. With the new administration taking charge of the US, India is keen to enhance its relations with the US in terms of trade.
The agenda also includes efforts to make it easier for its citizens to obtain skilled worker visas, sources told Reuters.
What does India plan to do about the tariffs?
As Donald Trump threatened tariffs, a Reuters report quoted sources as saying India is willing to make some concessions to Washington. India was also ready to offer incentives to attract more US investment in India.
The report quoted sources as saying that officials hope that an early meeting between the pair will help give a positive start to relations in Donald Trump’s new term.
