When lifestyle changes aren’t enough: Here’s what to do about chronic constipation.
In a sedentary lifestyle, there is less exercise and healthy eating, hence intestinal motility also reduces. Blood flow to the intestine will be reduced and once intestinal motility is reduced, food will remain in the large intestine for a longer period of time.
If stool remains in the large intestine for a long time there is more water absorption, so the stool becomes very dry and hard.
What are the symptoms of chronic constipation?
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Gautami N, consultant proctologist, Healing Hands Clinic, replied, “Having bowel movements less than 3 times in a week is constipation. The stool may be dry or hard, which patients may use fingers to remove, and there may be incomplete evacuation of stool along with abdominal pain and a feeling that something is stuck in their rectum.
Make lifestyle changes to avoid chronic constipation
Dr Gautami N shared, “At least 15-20 minutes of exercise a day is essential, carbohydrate intake has to be reduced, fiber intake has to be increased. The diet should include at least 35 grams of vegetables and one should drink plenty of water.”

If this doesn’t work with lifestyle changes, what needs to be done?
Dr Gautami N reveals, “If lifestyle changes don’t work, medicines are the only option. Laxatives will help, there are many types of laxatives, there are laxatives that increase the water content of the stool or many stimulants that reduce constipation. It depends on the type of constipation the person is suffering from. This may be due to chronic disease or low water intake or sedentary lifestyle. There is a need for more education about fiber food and for older patients, their metabolism decreases, so we have to focus on increasing their metabolism.”
