Amid the ongoing cold and dense fog, the Chandigarh administration announced changes in school timings for government, government-aided and recognized private schools in the Union Territory.
As per the order issued, classes in physical mode were suspended for classes up to class VIII, however, online classes will be held from 9 am onwards.
For students of classes 9 to 12, physical classes will start only after 9:30 am and end by 3:30 pm, for staff the timings may be adjusted accordingly.
Further, the order issued mentions that schools conducting pre-board classes are allowed to open till 9 am and timings for staff may be regulated accordingly.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded Chandigarh’s minimum temperature at 9 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
Moreover, dense fog has severely affected visibility in the city, hampering flight operations at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport. So far, two flights – one to Mumbai and the other to Delhi – have been cancelled.

According to IMD, there was a thick layer of fog in the city and the minimum temperature was recorded at 12.6 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, according to IMD, the temperature in Prayagraj dropped to 11 degrees Celsius.
A local person said that visibility in the city was nominal.
Speaking to ANI, a local said, “It is very cold right now. There is a lot of fog right now and visibility is also very low.”
The IMD had issued an alert regarding a fresh active western disturbance over northwest India from January 10 to 12.
Due to the effect of this western disturbance, light rain is expected in the north-western states.
