Kiran Rao remembers how she was like a Lapata Lady before Aamir Khan recited a line from Lapata Ladies.
Laapataaa Ladies It was undoubtedly one of the most talked about films of the year 2024. Starring veteran actors Ravi Kishan and Chhaya Kadam along with newcomers Nitanshi Goyal, Sparsh Srivastava and Pratibha Ranta, the film was Kiran Rao’s second project as a filmmaker after 13 years. directorial debut Dhobi Ghat (2011). The film touched many hearts and was an entertaining film without any melodrama. Co-produced by superstar and Kiran’s ex-husband Aamir Khan, it received rave reviews upon release and was also selected as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. Sadly it was not nominated. still, Laapataaa Ladies Made the country proud and made its place in the pages of history. So, how did the project reach Kiran?
During a recent roundtable discussion with RJ Rohini, Kiran remembered, “Aamir had narrated a line from the story to me, as he was on the jury of a screenwriting competition.” She added, “That one line was so compelling that I thought, I want to do this, so badly. And I was really lucky that they offered me the chance to make it. And I myself was struggling like a ‘missing lady’ for many years, trying to write and not find the right story to make my second film, so… yes! I mean, I think about that day often.”
For all those who are now waiting for the announcement of Kiran’s next film, the director has promised that it won’t take 13 years this time. Kiran shared that she is busy working on her next project and is in the middle of writing. “I am cooking a lot of things,” the filmmaker teased. “I don’t know which will boil over first.” Well, the audience is very ready!
