Regular coffee consumption changes the composition of your gut microbiome, increasing a certain type of bacteria.

Coffee is one of the most loved beverages. There are many points of debate and discussion on its physical effects. One study found a new physiological effect of coffee that alters how much of a particular beverage or food is consumed; Coffee in particular may have an impact here. The study, published in the journal Nature Microbiology, specifically found that frequent coffee drinkers had more of a certain type of gut bacteria than non-coffee drinkers.

Coffee affects the gut microbiome

The composition of the gut microbiome is affected by coffee. It is a community of bacteria and fungi that live in the intestine. The researchers, part of a larger team, examined stool and blood samples from nearly 77,000 individuals in the UK, US and 211 other global cohorts. They were particularly interested in understanding how coffee consumption affects the gut microbiome, given the beverage’s universal appeal and daily consumption patterns. As with coffee, people either drink regularly or do not drink at all, which shows more pronounced differences in the gut microbiome for those who do not share the same affinity for the beverage.

Researchers found significant differences in the levels of a gut bacteria called Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus found in coffee drinkers. People who regularly consumed coffee had bacteria levels eight times higher than those who did not consume it. It is reflected in different population groups around the world, suggesting that it is more universal than regional. Studies have shown an association between coffee consumption and this specific gut bacteria.

This study is important in explaining how frequent consumption of the same beverage can affect the gut microbiome. Although the focus was on coffee, it is a reminder of how important dietary choices are as they can shape the makeup of the gastrointestinal (GI) system.
