New Delhi. There is a place in Delhi which has a history of thousands of years. People also know it as Agrasen ki Baoli, Ugrasen ki Baoli or Bawdi. It is also called the ‘Patal Lok’ of the earth. But, since the last few years, the water level of this Baoli has started increasing suddenly. Due to the sudden increase in the water level, the tourists coming here are getting disappointed. Because, they are stopped from going to Paatal Lok. Tourists are disappointed as they are not able to descend 106 steps from the ground. This place, popularly known as Agrasen ki Baoli, is a center of attraction for Indians as well as foreign tourists. This place is also popular for ghost stories. This step well of Delhi is a great example of the architecture and engineering skills of medieval India. According to historians, this step well was built to provide relief from the heat. This step well is inspired by the step wells and reservoirs of prehistoric India. Its length is 60 meters and width is 15 meters. 106 stairs take you to the water level. It is said that as you go down, the temperature decreases. But now the water level has started increasing.

Karan Sakyan, Conservation Assistant of Archaeological Survey of India, while talking to AyraNews24x7 Hindi, said, ‘The water level in the stepwell has been increasing for the last two years. Earlier all the stairs were visible. But now about 45-46 stairs have been submerged in water. Cleaning work is going to start very soon. We will de-silt and then find out where the source of water is coming from. The water level in Delhi has increased in the last two years. The increase in Yamuna water level can also be a reason. Apart from this, we will also find out water leakage.’

Shalini, who came to see Agrasen Ki Baoli with her boyfriend, says, ‘Look, there is a rumour about Agrasen Ki Baoli that after coming here, people are forced to jump and end their lives after seeing the mysterious black water. But, I did not feel that way. Yes, one does feel scared when going down. It seems that there is some invisible force which is pulling them towards itself.’
