Regularly consuming a high protein diet may do more harm than good. Here’s what you need to know.

Usually for athletes, bodybuilders and people looking to build muscle individually, health experts recommend a high protein diet. The diet usually includes animal-based foods such as meat, eggs and milk – foods with high protein content. However, a high protein diet may not be as healthy as we think. A recent study conducted by scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has shown that excess protein in the daily diet may contribute to heart diseases.

What is atherosclerosis?

Atherosclerosis is a heart disease in which the arteries become severely hardened and narrowed due to the buildup of plaque. Studies have shown that a diet containing more than 22 percent of calories from protein may increase the risk of this heart disease.

The study demonstrates a complex molecular mechanism by which high-protein diets may increase the activation of immune cells that are involved in the formation of atherosclerotic plaques – potentially increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

High protein and risk of health-related diseases

Dr. Babak Razani, senior and co-study author and professor of cardiology at the University of Pittsburgh, said in a media release that when we increase protein intake in our diet to improve metabolic health, there is a risk of damage to the arteries.

The study further challenges the notion that high protein diets can lead to health benefits such as muscle maintenance and weight loss. The study further revealed that protein derived from animal sources may have unintended health consequences. It also raises concerns about the amount of protein intake considered healthy for the body, exploring dietary factors that may have cardiovascular effects. Especially for people at risk of heart diseases and blood vessel disorders, it is important to have a balanced diet with all nutrition rather than focusing only on protein intake. Considering the molecular effect of diet on health – one of the leading causes of mortality – it is necessary to look at diet holistically.
