Addressing the platinum jubilee celebrations of Ramakrishna Mahavidyalaya in Unakoti district, the chief minister highlighted the government’s initiative to provide free education to girls up to college level from 2022.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday said the gross enrolment ratio (GER) of girl students in higher education has increased in the state.
“This academic year (2024-25), 37,450 girl students have enrolled in general degree colleges as against 35,800 male students. In the last academic year (2023-24), the number of girl students (35,650) in degree colleges was higher than their male counterparts (35,800),” the CM said.
Addressing the platinum jubilee celebrations of Ramakrishna Mahavidyalaya in Unakoti district, the chief minister highlighted the government’s initiative to provide free education to girls up to college level from 2022.
“We actively support the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign and have implemented several measures, including 33 per cent reservation for women in government jobs, setting up of ‘pink toilets’ and 50 per cent reservation for women in government shops. These initiatives reflect our commitment to women’s welfare,” Saha said.
He attributed the increase in the GER of girl students to these measures and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the successful implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) in the state colleges.
He said, “The coming generations will get full benefit from NEP. We have also started ‘Lakshya’ scheme to help students prepare for competitive exams like UPSC. Apart from this, preparations are on to open Dhammadeep University in Sabroom and we are also working on Techno India University and Aryavart International University.”
Saha stressed the government’s efforts to transform Tripura into an education hub and said dental colleges, nursing colleges and other educational institutions were being established rapidly there.
