New Delhi. The country’s leading automobile companies have released the May auto sales numbers. Domestic automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki’s car sales declined by 2 percent in May, while Mahindra & Mahindra’s sales increased by 17 percent. Apart from this, companies like Kia, Hyundai, Toyota and MG Motors also released their May auto sales numbers. Maruti Suzuki India’s vehicle sales declined by 2 percent year-on-year to 1,74,551 units in May. In the same month last year, the company had supplied 1,78,083 vehicles to distributors. MSI said in a statement on Saturday that its sales in the passenger vehicle segment in the domestic market increased slightly to 1,44,002 units, from 1,43,708 units in May last year.

Maruti’s small car sales decreased
Sales of the company’s small cars like Alto and S-Preso declined to 9,902 units in May from 12,236 units in May last year. Sales of compact cars – Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, Tour S and Wagon R also declined to 68,206 units in May from 71,419 units in the same month last year. Sales of multi-purpose vehicles – Brezza, Grand Vitara, Ertiga, S-Cross and XL6 increased to 54,204 units in May from 46,243 units in May 2023.
Van sales declined to 10,960 units in May from 12,818 units in the same month last year. Light commercial vehicle Super Carry sales stood at 2,692 units in May from 2,888 units in May last year. The company’s vehicle exports declined to 17,367 units in May from 26,477 units in the same month last year.
Mahindra & Mahindra sales increased by 17 percent
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M)’s vehicle sales grew 17 percent year-on-year to 71,682 units in May. In the same month last year, the company had supplied 61,415 vehicles to distributors. Mumbai-headquartered company M&M said in a statement on Saturday that its sales in the passenger vehicle segment in the domestic market grew 31 percent to 43,218 units from 32,886 units in May last year. The company’s vehicle exports grew two percent to 2,671 units in May from 2,616 units in the same month last year.
Tractor sales in Mahindra’s Agricultural Equipment Segment (FES) grew nine per cent to 37,109 units in May as against 34,126 units in May 2023. “The timely arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala and northeastern states and the forecast of above normal monsoon have improved farmer sentiment,” said Hemant Sikka, President, FES Segment, M&M.
Tata Motors sales also jump
Tata Motors’ vehicle sales in May rose 2 percent year-on-year to 76,766 units. In the same month last year, the company had supplied 74,973 vehicles to distributors. Tata Motors said in a statement to the stock exchange on Saturday that its sales in the domestic market rose 2 percent to 75,173 units, compared to 73,448 units in May last year.
Sales of total passenger vehicles including electric vehicles in the domestic market increased by 2 percent to 47,075 units, as against 45,984 units in May last year. Sales of total commercial vehicles of the company also increased by 2 percent to 29,691 units in May, as against 28,989 units in the same month last year.
KIA Car Sales Figures
Kia India’s vehicle sales grew by 4 percent year-on-year to 19,500 units in May. The company said this in a statement on Saturday. In the same month last year, the company sold 18,766 vehicles. Kia India’s Senior Vice President and Head (Sales and Marketing) Hardeep Singh Brar said, “So far this year, we have been aggressive in introducing new competitive versions of our models, which has contributed significantly to our sales.” He said that with a strong network expansion strategy, the company will continue to grow in the rest of the year and will soon cross the milestone of 10 lakh units domestic sales.
Having a motor
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL)’s vehicle sales grew 7 per cent year-on-year to 63,551 units in May. The company sold 59,601 vehicles in the same month last year. The company’s domestic wholesale sales grew 1 per cent to 49,151 units in May from 48,601 units in May last year. The company said in a statement on Saturday that vehicle exports grew 31 per cent to 14,400 units in May from 11,000 units in May last year.
HMIL Chief Operating Officer (COO) Tarun Garg said, “We have maintained a healthy sales in May, 2024 despite the factory being shut down for a week due to routine biannual maintenance at our Sriperumbudur factory.” He said that the sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment continues to be the biggest contributor to the growth.
Toyota and MG Motors
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Saturday said its total wholesale sales in May grew 24 per cent year-on-year to 25,273 units. The company’s domestic sales stood at 23,959 units in the month under review, while exports stood at 1,314 units. The vehicle company had dispatched 20,410 units to its dealers in May 2023. TKM Vice President (Sales, Service, Used Car Business) Sabri Manohar said in a statement, “Our consistent customer-centric approach has inspired us to stay ahead by understanding the diverse needs of our customers and offering a diverse range of products and services.”
MG Motor India’s wholesale sales fell 5 percent year-on-year to 4,769 units in May. The company had sold 5,006 vehicles in May last year. The automaker said in a statement on Saturday that it received a positive response for electric vehicles (EVs) last month. The company said that last month the segment accounted for 36 percent of the company’s total vehicle sales.
