Vivek Agnihotri raised questions on ‘Hiramandi’, said on courtesans of Lahore – ‘That place anytime…’

Date:

New Delhi: Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s previous film ‘The Vaccine War’ was not particularly liked by the audience, but he shocked the audience with ‘The Kashmir Files’. Apart from films, he has been in the headlines for his outspoken comments on various issues. Now he has expressed his opinion on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s series ‘Hiramandi’. In fact, when a Pakistani doctor strongly criticized the series, even the director did not shy away from commenting. He praised the Pakistani doctor for criticizing the show on X.

Vivek wrote, ‘I have not seen the show, but I have been to Lahore’s Hiramandi a few times. There is a tendency in Bollywood to romanticize courtesans and brothels. This is sad, because brothels have never been places of prosperity, glamor or beauty. These are monuments to human injustice, pain and suffering. People unfamiliar with it should watch Shyam Benegal’s ‘Mandi’.

The director supported the doctor’s criticism and tweeted, ‘It was said that the show lacks research, some things have been shown in it, which do not match well with the facts.’ Vivek further said, ‘Also a question we should ask, does creativity give us the freedom to glamorize human suffering? Is it right to make a film which depicts slum life as a life of prosperity? Is it right to portray slum dwellers like this?
