He left JMM hours before joining the BJP, claiming that he was being “neglected and isolated” in Jharkhand’s ruling party.
Sita Soren joined BJP in the presence of its national general secretary Vinod Tawde and Jharkhand election in-charge Laxmikant Bajpai.
Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he pledged his support to the BJP to “save Jharkhand”.
“I had to take this decision today and the way we saw from PM Modi’s pan India tour, India’s name is becoming popular even in foreign countries, so seeing this, I have faith in JP Nadda ji, Amit Shah ji, Devendra And there is faith.” Fernand ji, I will get support from them and we have to save Jharkhand.”
Who is Sita Soren?
Sita Soren alias Sita Murmu is the sister-in-law of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief Hemant Soren. She is the widow of his elder brother Durga Soren.
Sita was elected MLA from Jama for the first time in 2009. Soon after, he was appointed as the national general secretary of JMM.
He won Jharkhand Assembly elections from Jama twice in 2014 and 2019.
Three-time MLA from Jama and daughter-in-law of party supremo Shibu Soren has been accused of taking money from RK Aggarwal in the 2012 Rajya Sabha elections. Above Rs 2 crore was seized from his residence on the day of the 2012 elections. Sita also spent seven months in jail on corruption charges and is now out on bail.
On March 4, following a petition by Sita Soren, the Supreme Court overturned the 1998 JMM bribery case verdict, which protected her father-in-law from prosecution.
He argued before the top court that the constitutional provisions granting immunity to MPs from prosecution and the 1998 verdict, which acquitted his father-in-law in the JMM bribery scam, should be applied to him.
He had moved the top court against the Jharkhand High Court’s order of 17 February 2014, which had refused to quash the criminal case registered against him.
Recently, after the arrest of Hemant Soren, there was speculation that his wife Kalpana Soren would become the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Sita openly opposed this idea and said, “I will strongly oppose any move to make him the CM.”
She said, “I would like to ask why only Kalpana Soren, who is not even an MLA and has no political experience…when there are so many senior leaders in the party, under what circumstances is her name named as the next chief minister?” It is being taken forward.” Questioned.
“There are many senior leaders who can be handed over the reins of the party. If they want to choose from the family, I am the senior most in the House and have been an MLA for almost 14 years,” she said.
Why did he leave Jharkhand Mukti Morcha?
In her resignation letter to the Jharkhand Assembly Speaker, Sita Soren said that this is a matter of morality for her. He has also claimed that he is not being given due respect.
“Many situations arose in the party, ultimately it was a matter of morality for me,” the resignation letter reads.
“I have come to know that a conspiracy is being hatched against me and my family…I am left with no option but to tender my resignation,” he said.
Citing the lack of respect in the 14 years she spent with JMM, Sita said: “I served the party for 14 years, but till today I have not got the respect I should have got in those 14 years.” Due to which I had to take this big decision to honor the hard work of my late husband Durgashwar ji… We are untouched by this till date, we have not received any respect from any kind of party.
However, JMM leader Manoj Pandey refuted his claims of lack of respect and said that the party considered him an important member.
“It is very unfortunate. We hope she will back down. The kind of respect she has got from this party, I don’t think she will get anywhere else… if she comes under the influence of people who oppose us. If so, then she is “harming herself,” Pandey said.
