92% Indians use AI in workplace, 2024 Work Trend Index revealed

Mumbai: Microsoft and LinkedIn have today released the India-related report of the 2024 Work Trend Index on the status of AI use in the workplace. The title of this report is, ‘AI at work is here. Now comes the hard part’. It tells how in just one year AI has influenced the way people work, lead and hire people.

Microsoft and LinkedIn have worked together for the first time for the fourth Work Trend Index. So that we can know how AI is shaping work. So that comprehensive information can be obtained on this. The results of this report are based on a survey of 31,000 people in 31 countries, labor and recruitment trends on LinkedIn, trillions of Microsoft 365 productivity signals, and research conducted among Fortune 500 customers.

This report highlights 3 things every business leader and professional need to know about the impact of AI on work, talent, and hiring in the years to come:

1. Employees want AI in their offices

India’s workforce is very optimistic about AI. 92 percent of knowledge workers use AI in their workplace, while the worldwide average is 75%. This shows that the workforce trusts AI to save time, boost creativity and improve focus. 91 percent of business leaders in India also believe that their companies need to adopt AI to remain competitive, but 54 percent are concerned that their organization lacks a plan and vision for its implementation.

While leaders feel pressure to convert individual productivity benefits into company benefits. At the same time, employees are not waiting for anyone to take advantage of AI. This report shows that 72 percent of Indian AI users are using their own AI tools at work. These data show that people are turning to AI to be more productive and creative in the workplace.

2. AI breaks the limits of employees
LinkedIn data shows that mentions of AI in LinkedIn job posts have increased by 17 percent. In such a situation, it has become a two-way street. Organizations that upskill employees with AI tools and training will attract the best talent, and professionals who are adept at AI will have an edge.

As far as recruitment is concerned, AI skills have now become the most important thing for business leaders in India. 75 percent of business leaders say they would not hire someone who lacks AI skills. This figure is more than the global average of 66 percent. Interestingly, AI skills have now become more important than experience. 80 percent of business leaders in India prefer to hire a less experienced candidate with AI skills than a more experienced candidate without AI skills.

The data released in this report shows that by the end of last year, there has been a 142 times increase in the addition of AI skills like Copilot and Chat PT among LinkedIn members globally. There has been a 160 percent increase in non-technical professionals using LinkedIn Learning courses to improve their AI skills.

3. Rise of AI power users
A research has revealed four types of AI users. The first are the skeptics who rarely use AI. Others are heavy users who use it extensively. In between these two, novice and explorer users are also included. Compared to skeptics, AI power users have fundamentally changed their working day. 90 percent of Indian AI power users start their day with AI and 91 percent rely on it to prepare for the day ahead. They are 37 percent more likely to seek guidance from colleagues regarding helpful hints and 47 percent more likely to experiment with AI.

Additionally, AI power users are nearly 20 percent more likely than other employees to receive training specifically on prompts and role-specific AI use. They are 65 percent more likely to receive a mail from a CEO on generative AI.

Has AI become a necessity for work?
Irina Ghosh, Managing Director, Microsoft India and South Asia said, “Data from the Work Trends Index shows that AI has now become a reality at work. India has the highest AI adoption rate among knowledge workers at 92%. This rate is increasing in all sectors from BFSI to healthcare, ITES and public sector. This is very encouraging. “This optimism about AI presents a tremendous opportunity for companies to invest in the right tools and training.”

The world is changing with time
Ruchi Anand, head of talent and learning solutions at LinkedIn, said, “AI is changing the world of work. Talent is getting a new look. Both employees and organizations are being motivated to embrace change. “The demand for AI expertise has seen a significant increase of 17% since last year.” We have seen professionals in India adding AI skills to their professional toolkit as well as harnessing the benefits of AI. “It is important for leaders to boost their organization’s AI capabilities through thoughtful investments in both technology and talent.”
