8 types of marriage
According to other scriptures including Manusmriti, Yajnavalkya Smriti and Parashar Smriti, understand eight types of marriages and their meanings in easy language including examples from Jyotishacharya.
1. Brahma Marriage: When the girl is married to her consent with her consent to the groom with a good family and the best character, she is called Brahma Vivah. There is no force in this and marriage is done by seeing the auspicious time. Example: Ram-Sita marriage, in which King Janak married his daughter Sita with Vedic customs with her consent.
2. Dev Marriage: When a worthy Brahmin (Ritviz) is honored with a honorary girl during a religious yajna, it is called Dev Vivah. In this, the girl is assigned for any religious purpose, service or virtuous work.
Example: Lord Rama’s elder sister Shanta was married to Rishi Shringa only through Dev marriage.
3. Aarsha Marriage: In this marriage, the groom provides cow and bull to the girl’s family in return. This transaction is inspired by religion, so it is called Aarsha Vivah. This marriage is considered associated with the tradition of sages. This method is also associated with some tribal castes.
Example: If a young man who is studying in an ashram marries his own guru’s daughter, then he is called Aarsha Vivah.
4. Prajapatya Marriage: In this marriage, the father departs the girl with the groom saying that “both of you together follow the household life”, this marriage is considered to be the strengthening of the household religion. The child produced by this is called holy and virtue. There is neither transaction nor special religious ritual in this marriage.
5. Asura Marriage: When the groom marries the girl’s family by giving money or other property, it is called Asura Vivah. In this, the desire or reluctance of the girl is not taken care of, so it is considered condemnable.
Example: A rich person married his daughter by giving money to a poor family, even if the daughter is not ready for this marriage.
6. Gandharva Marriage: When the groom and the girl marry without any religious rituals of their own will, it is called Gandharva marriage. It is similar to today’s love marriage. In the scriptures, it has been considered neither superior nor completely condemnable.
Example: Shakuntala and King Dushyant got married without any social customs after liking each other. There was no consent of parents or society in this.
7. Monster Marriage: If a girl is kidnapped, threatened or forced marry, it is called demon marriage. The girl does not agree in this.
8. Pishch Marriage: When a person marries her by exploiting drunk, mentally weak, slept or unconscious girl, it is called Pishach marriage. It has been considered the most half -hearted and sinful in all types of marriages.
