Colombo. Sri Lanka has asked thousands of Russian and Ukrainian tourists living in the country on extended visas due to the war to leave the country within two weeks. Officials said that the Immigration Controller has informed the Tourism Ministry by issuing a notice. The notice states that Russian and Ukrainian tourists will have to leave the country within the next two weeks after February 23, as their visas have expired.
However, President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office issued a circular saying he had ordered an investigation into how the decision to cancel the extended visas was taken without Cabinet approval. The Presidential Media Division said that the Sri Lankan government has not officially decided to cancel the visa extensions previously granted to these tourists.

About 3,00,000 Russians and 20,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Sri Lanka since the war began in 2022.
