Dropping your smartphone into water can be a scary experience, but don’t panic. If you take the right steps immediately, you can save your phone.

Take out the phone immediately. The length of time the phone is exposed to water increases the damage. Get it out within seconds.

Turn off the phone immediately (if it’s on). Even if the screen goes black or the phone restarts, leave it turned off. There is a risk of short circuit due to electric current, which can completely damage the phone.

Remove all external parts. Remove the cover of the phone, so that the moisture inside can dry quickly. Remove the SIM tray with the help of a safety pin and separate the SIM and memory card. If any cable or accessory is attached, remove it immediately.

Wipe the phone with a soft, dry and absorbent cloth. Clean thoroughly especially around the ports, speakers and buttons. Shake the phone gently to remove a few drops of water from the ports. Keep in mind that forcefully shaking or shaking the phone may cause water to spread further inside.

Place the phone in a sealed bag or container and fill it with small packets of silica gel. If silica gel is not available, cover the phone with raw rice. Rice helps in absorbing moisture. Leave it like this for at least 24-48 hours.

Don’t be in a hurry to charge or turn on the phone. Let it dry for at least 24-48 hours. Patience is the key to success in this process.
