The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has announced that no controversial questions can be included in the secondary school examination. The board has announced that if any controversial question appears in the 2026 secondary school examination, the headmaster of the concerned school will be held responsible. This new instruction has given rise to controversy.
Commenting on this directive, Supriyo Panja, headmaster of a school in Kolkata, told AyraNews24x7 Bangla that subject teachers will prepare questions, which will be sent to the printer in a sealed envelope and then distributed to students confidentially. If the principal reviews all questions, this could jeopardize confidentiality.
Many headmasters have reported that they have clearly instructed subject teachers during a meeting that no questions should be asked outside the syllabus. Therefore, subject teachers should be cautious while setting questions.
Partha Pratim Vaidya, principal of Jadavpur Vidyapeeth, commented that the board has warned the principals through this directive. However, question framers should also be cautious to avoid unnecessary debate. All parties should be alert to prevent disputes.
The board has specified that subject-based teachers of each school will create test questions. Schools must compile their questions independently and are prohibited from purchasing them through any external organization or agency.
Soudipa Das, editor of the Collegium of Assistant Principals and Assistant Principals, said the academic council should oversee everything from question preparation to printing. However, in most cases, school heads control everything, so their responsibility cannot be ignored.
The board has directed that each school must email its examination questions to the board office at the end of the examination. An official of the WB Board said that if any school does not follow this rule, action will be taken against it. The last date to accept the secondary testing exam is between 3rd to 13th November.
