Can shortness of breath be an early warning sign of heart disease?
“About half of men with heart disease experience erectile dysfunction, and this can occur up to five years before heart disease,” explains Dr. DiNicolantonio. “This is caused by decreased blood flow and plaque buildup in the arteries of the penis. Erectile dysfunction is often overlooked as a symptom, but it can serve as an early warning sign that something may be wrong with your cardiovascular system.”
“Another possible early sign is experiencing shortness of breath during light activity,” he adds. “If climbing a few stairs or doing light exercise makes you feel abnormally short of breath, especially if accompanied by chest discomfort or angina, this is a sign that your heart is struggling. This is a symptom that should never be ignored, as it may indicate decreased heart function or the early stages of coronary artery disease.”
Is swelling in feet and ankles a hidden danger?
“Finally, swelling in the feet, ankles or lower legs may indicate heart failure or kidney dysfunction,” warns Dr. DiNicolantonio. “Fluid retention is a common but often overlooked symptom of cardiovascular problems. Persistent swelling should prompt medical evaluation to rule out underlying heart or kidney problems.”
Dr. DiNicolantonio concluded, “Recognizing these subtle, early signs can make a significant difference in preventing serious cardiovascular events. Early intervention, lifestyle modifications, and medical guidance are important. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult your doctor immediately.”
