In a shocking incident, a student died after he was allegedly attacked during a freshers’ party at a private college in Maharashtra’s Latur district.
Local police confirmed that the incident occurred on 8 October. The event was organized at a premier college in MIDC area of Latur. After the death, police arrested six students in the case.
What caused the attack?
The incident started with a minor dispute while dancing at the freshers’ party. The victim, Suraj Shinde, had a heated argument with a group of fellow students. Within no time the dispute turned into violence. The angry students reportedly attacked Shinde with sticks and punches.
Shinde suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital. He died during treatment. Following the incident, police registered a case of murder based on a complaint by a college student and detained four students till October 16, an official statement said.
Two more students were captured on Tuesday, 21 October, after their involvement in the attack was revealed.
All the arrested students have been charged under sections of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS), including murder, voluntarily causing hurt, causing grievous bodily harm by using dangerous means or weapons, criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.
Police sub-inspector Suresh Pogulwar is leading the investigation in the case.
16 students suspended for ragging in Allahabad University
Meanwhile, Allahabad University has recently suspended sixteen students after they were found involved in an alleged ragging incident.
The university has also issued show cause notices to the suspended students.
According to the order issued by University Proctor Professor Rakesh Singh, after the complaint of ragging, the Anti Ragging Squad conducted a surprise inspection of Sir Sunderlal Hostel on October 9.
During inspection, prima facie many students were found involved in this act.
A disciplinary committee formed to investigate the matter later recommended action against sixteen students. Acting on the committee’s recommendation, the university suspended the students with immediate effect and ordered their expulsion from the hostel.
The proctor has directed the suspended students to attend a meeting before the inquiry committee on October 30. They will have to be present with their parents or guardians with valid identity proof to submit their written explanation.
