Are you worried that your deodorant may cause cancer? Hyderabad-based oncologist Dr Sadvik Raghuram breaks down the science and why the risk is largely theoretical.
We all love to start our day fresh, right? A quick shower, a hit of deodorant, and we’re ready to go. But what if that everyday habit you barely think about could actually be putting you at risk? Hyderabad-based oncologist Dr Sadvik Raghuram explained in his October 28 Instagram post that your deodorant habit could be a hidden risk of cancer.
Can your deodorant cause hormonal changes?
“Regular deodorants often contain chemicals like aluminum and parabens. When applied, these ingredients temporarily block sweat ducts. Some theories suggest this blockage may trigger hormonal changes. Since deodorants are applied near the underarm, close to the breast tissue, people are concerned it may increase the risk of breast cancer,” he says.
However, Dr. Raghuram emphasizes that this is largely a theoretical concern. “Although this idea is often discussed, research and numerous studies have not found any solid evidence linking general deodorant use to breast cancer or any other type of cancer. The risk remains theoretical, it has not been proven in real life,” he explained.
Is there a link between deodorant and cancer?
He says it’s natural to be cautious about the products we use, but using deodorant daily is considered safe. Dr. Raghuram adds, “It’s always good to be informed and read labels, but there’s no reason to panic or stress about your deodorant. The science doesn’t support a real cancer risk from standard use.”
In short, your daily use of deodorant is safe, and worrying unnecessarily may increase stress. The real key is to stay clean, confident and informed, your deodorant is not the hidden culprit some people think it is.
