Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Wednesday announced that precautionary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of students and staff during the ongoing rainy season. Speaking to reporters, Poyyamozhi mentioned that teachers have been instructed to strictly follow standard operating procedures (SOP) during heavy rainfall.

“Usually, during the rainy season, teachers in schools are instructed on SOPs – for example, if water gets accumulated, they should contact the nearby Public Works Department (PWD) officer to drain it using a motor; and if there are borewells, they should be properly covered,” he explained.

As per ANI report, he also said that orders have been issued for school inspection to identify and fix any electrical leakage to prevent accidents. Further, the minister said that district collectors across the state have been authorized to declare school holidays depending on the intensity of rain and local conditions.

According to the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), several districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry continued to receive heavy rainfall today as a low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal showed signs of intensifying. The system, which moved north-westwards off the northern coast of Sri Lanka, was centered near the Tamil Nadu coast on Wednesday morning.

All schools in Chennai were closed on Wednesday due to warning of heavy rain.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported heavy to very heavy rainfall (7–20 cm) over South Peninsular India during 22–24 and extremely heavy rainfall (≥ 21 cm) over North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on 22 October.

Meanwhile, another well-marked low pressure area over the south-east Arabian Sea has degenerated into a depression. The system is located about 630 km west-southwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep) and 1020 km southwest of Panjim (Goa). Widespread rainfall has already been recorded over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
