Hurricane Melissa Update: Melissa, which is being called the worst storm of this century, has caused huge devastation in some parts of the Caribbean region. Extensive damage caused by Hurricane Melissa is being assessed. According to the latest updates, dozens of people have died in this terrible storm and there has been huge destruction. Hurricane Melissa, one of the Atlantic hurricanes (Category 5), reached Jamaica on Tuesday. Then it weakened while passing through Cuba and Bahamas. According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), as of Thursday morning the storm was moving towards Bermuda.
The NHC has warned that despite the storm’s weakening, devastating flooding and landslides will continue in parts of the Caribbean. The worst-affected areas include Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti, where severe flooding and winds have damaged infrastructure. Trees have been uprooted at many places and power lines have been broken. Local officials said rescue and relief operations are underway, however, widespread power outages, telecom failures and blocked roads are hampering rescue efforts. At the same time, officials said that more than 30 people have died in Jamaica, Haiti and Dominican Republic. The number of deaths is expected to increase as more information comes from different areas.

flood devastation
Four bodies were washed away in flood waters in the southern area of St. Elizabeth in Jamaica. This area has suffered the most damage. “I am saddened to announce that police in St. Elizabeth have confirmed the deaths of four people,” Jamaica’s Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie said in a statement. Their bodies were discovered after they were washed away in the floods caused by the storm. Emergency relief flights began arriving at Jamaica’s main international airport, which reopened late Wednesday night. Workers were distributing food, water and medical supplies, while helicopters were delivering aid to remote communities cut off by collapsed bridges and impassable roads.
International offer of help
After this disaster, assistance was offered at the international level. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, ‘After the devastation of Hurricane Melissa in eastern Cuba, the Trump administration stands with the brave Cuban people who are struggling to meet their basic needs. The United States stands ready to provide humanitarian assistance both directly and through local partners. As the Caribbean’s difficult rebuilding process begins, countries in the region and beyond have pledged assistance in the form of cash, food aid and rescue teams.
