Can diabetes trigger cataracts?

The eye specialist said that diabetes is one of the major causes of cataract and blindness. He said that the duration of diabetes and poor blood sugar control may be a risk factor in cataract formation. He said, “Any sudden visual loss should indicate immediate evaluation, especially in patients with prolonged or uncontrolled diabetes, to exclude retinal complications (eg, diabetic retinopathy).”
