Mexico City: A fire broke out after an explosion in a department store in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora state in northern Mexico. At least 23 people died in the accident, including four children. News agency Xinhua quoted the report as saying that the explosion took place in a departmental store in the city. Eyewitnesses said the fire quickly spread to the building and nearby vehicles, trapping many people inside.
The rescue team reached the spot and started the search and rescue operation. 12 people injured in the incident were taken to local hospitals. In the initial investigation, the cause of the fire is said to be smoke coming from a faulty transformer. The explosion took place in a shop of the local Waldo’s Store, after which the building caught fire. Sonora officials have ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack.
A video of this incident is also going viral on social media. In this video shared on Twitter, thick smoke can be seen rising from the supermarket after the explosion. Firefighters and police arrived immediately and started relief and rescue operations, yet more than 20 people died.
