LOS ANGELES (AP) — Emma Stone was proud to say she didn’t break any bones while shooting the absurdist comedy sci-fi movie “Bugonia.”
“I broke a lot of bones,” she told Reuters, recalling how nervous she was when it came time for co-star Jesse Plemons to take over for her in the role of Teddy Gatz, a conspiracy-theory-obsessed beekeeper.
“He was completely safe and did an incredible job. I didn’t have any broken bones,” she said.
In “Bugonia,” Stone plays Michelle Fuller, a powerful pharmaceutical CEO who is abducted by two conspiracy theorist cousins who are convinced she is an alien.
The film is based on the 2003 South Korean film “Save the Green Planet!” Is based on. Written and directed by Jang Joon-hwan, and will be released in select theaters on Friday and then across the US on October 31.
Plemons plays Gatz while rising actor Aidan Delboise plays his cousin named Don.
The real-life Delbys and her fictional character Don are both on the autism spectrum, adding representation to the big-name Hollywood film distributed by Focus Features.
Director Yorgos Lanthimos said of the Don character, “That character felt different and felt like he had a different sensibility and a different view of the world, and he was very sensitive.”
“So, I thought a neurodivergent person would be a perfect fit for this kind of role,” he said.
For Lanthimos, the role of Delbis, which was the actor’s feature film debut, served as “the soul of the film” as well as “the voice of reason” that resonates throughout the film.
Stone also felt that the story presented complex characters, particularly highlighting the tension between Fuller and Gaetz.
Stone said, “It’s a lot of fun throughout the story to find out whose side you’re on back and forth, who’s right, who’s wrong, and they’re both right, and they’re both very wrong.”
