Candles are one of the most valuable decoration items in a house, which transforms a location into a warm, comfortable shelter. Aromatic candles, especially, are bottled moods that can be burnt once-how a caramel-smelling candle channels a cafe vibe, while floral lavender notes bring a touch of cottagecore attraction. Aromatic candles, due to their wide variety, have also become a popular gift option.
But did you become blind to their calm beauty, unaware of their possible health risks? A study published in Nature Communications has revealed the underlying health hazards that are spontaneous aromatic candles currency.

Brain effect

Researchers explained that aromatic candles cause indoor pollution that affect cognitive function in turn. Pollution causes inflammation in the brain which is responsible for weak brain function.
The study assessed the effects of Particulate Matter (PM) pollution from candles on cognitive abilities. Researchers exposed 26 adults to burn candles for one hour or polluted air from clean air. Later, researchers conducted tests and saw a sharp decline in selective attention and emotional recognition after breathing in polluted air.
Selective attention is important to decide and focus on tasks and distract. Sociosity is a social behavior that helps people recognize emotions in themselves and others.
Researchers say that indoor pollution causes these cognitive problems. Regular light candles can combine important health issues over time. This is why researchers highlighted them in a well -ventilated area as it can reduce risks.
Other health hazards
The health hazards of candles are not limited to cognitive functions, they engage in very serious issues.
Christian Pafrang, a professor at atmospheric science at the University of Birmingham, said, “Aromatic candles aldehydes, such as especially formaldehyde, and are quite bad for health,”
Aldihydes can irritate the skin, throat, lungs and eyes, potentially leading to headaches, allergies and dizziness. They are also classified as carcinogenes, which means they have the ability to get cancer.
In addition, when the aroma material burns in candles, they can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene and polycyclic aeromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are both associated with cancer.
According to Christian Pfrang, burning a candle releases particles like PM2.5, which can enter the lungs with carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NO), and sulfur dioxide (SO2).
It further increases the potential risks of heart disease and asthma.
You can consider aromatic candles as bottled aesthetics in wax, but you do not know that in fact, they are hiding adverse health risks.
