Nutrient deficiencies often show up as subtle symptoms like constant hunger and fatigue. Dr. Sethi throws light on the early symptoms of deficiency of 5 such nutrients.
When it comes to nutrient deficiencies, the body often sends subtle warning signals long before more obvious symptoms appear. However, many people make the mistake of considering advanced signs like hair loss, fatigue or constipation as early indicators – when in reality, deficiency may have already progressed by that point. Recognizing the body’s early, less obvious signals can make a significant difference in preventing long-term health complications, identifying and treating deficiencies early.

Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard and Stanford universities, has revealed the early warning signs of five nutrient deficiencies. In an Instagram post shared on October 4, the gastroenterologist sheds light on several symptoms that are often mistaken for signs of early deficiency — and explains what the real early warning signs actually are.
lack of fiber
According to Dr. Sethi, the first sign of fiber deficiency is not always constipation, as many people believe. This often starts appearing very early – such as feeling hungry soon after eating, even after a satisfying meal.
protein deficiency
The first sign of protein deficiency is often confused with muscle loss. However, gastroenterologists point out that early red flags are persistent fatigue and brain fog.
calcium deficiency
Dr. Sethi emphasizes that calcium deficiency does not always show up as weakness in your bones. Instead, it is tingling or numbness in your fingers that indicates a nutrient deficiency.

zinc deficiency
According to Dr. Sethi, “The first sign of zinc deficiency is loss of appetite”. He explains that slow-healing wounds as well as “loss of taste or smell” are more obvious warning signs.
iron deficiency
“The first sign of iron deficiency is not hair loss or dark circles. It is feeling tired even after a good night’s sleep,” says the gastroenterologist.
