48 migrant laborers from Jharkhand are stranded in Tunisia and are facing serious difficulties. The workers allege that they were fraudulently sent abroad by a private recruitment company in Delhi and are being forced to work there for 12-12 hours without salary and food. Most of the stranded laborers are residents of Hazaribagh, Giridih and Bokaro districts. He said that he was promised a proper contract and fixed wages before leaving, but after reaching Tunisia he neither received a contract nor a salary.

Many laborers have said in video messages that they have not received any salary for the last three to six months, due to which they are hungry and have no money left even to contact their families. A laborer said in the video, ‘We are hungry, very upset, we want to return to India somehow.’ According to reports, the company against which the workers have accused has been named as Prem Power Construction Private Limited. According to the workers, the company had recruited them for the high voltage power line project and later changed the conditions. They are being threatened that if they protest or want to return, they will be sent to jail.

Government came into action

After the video messages went viral, the Jharkhand Labor Department has taken the matter seriously. The Migrant Control Cell of the department has contacted the stranded laborers and has started the process of safe return in coordination with the Indian Embassy, ​​Tunisia. Migrant Control Cell team leader Shikha Lakra said, ‘We have contacted all the laborers and their documents are being verified. Talks are being held with the Indian Embassy officials so that everyone can be brought back to India safely.

Social worker raised the matter

Giridih’s social worker Sikandar Ali first informed the authorities about this matter. He told that he had received a video of a laborer Sanjay Kumar (Giridih) on Thursday night, in which he had narrated his plight. He said, ‘I immediately shared the video with the Labor Department and journalists, after which it was sent to the Chief Minister’s Office.’

Situation bad in Tunisia

According to reports, Tunisia is struggling with rapidly rising inflation and supply crisis these days. Because of this the workers are not able to even get food. Many laborers have not eaten a full meal for weeks. In the group, 19 laborers are from Hazaribagh, 14 from Giridih and 15 from Bokaro.
